Eye Injuries - Prevention Better Than the Cure
The frequency of eye injuries is 1 person in every 277 for the United States and these stats don't appear to be improving, though it is unrealistic to think that they will ever disappear completely.
During professional practice the optometrists at Only Specs have observed a wide variety of eye injuries ranging from foreign bodies to chemical burns. Common foreign bodies needing removal from eyes' include metal, plaster, cement, sand, and timber. One of the less commonly observed foreign bodies included ants and other insects. Though while working in India an we did observe an eye that had a severe corneal opacity that had resulted from a person being whipped in the eye by a bulls tail. So you can never be too careful.
Ocular surface grazes (or scratches to the cornea - front clear part of the eye) are another common injury, generally resulting from finger nails or flying objects. Chemical burns are also quite common from fumes and digital transfer, the chemicals involved found at home and industry.
